While cholesterol has been the primary predictor of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, a new review indicates that insulin resistance is actually more important. The review has questioned whether statins, medication that lowers cholesterol, is as valuable as many believe.
The review looked at a number of studies that focused on lowering a patient’s cholesterol, but, overall, did not improve their overall health. The study also looked at obesity, specifically in how an individual changes their caloric intake to lose weight. The source of the calories instead of the overall number of calories, the review concluded, is more important. The review ended by urging doctors to change their message from one of calorie counting to one focused on overeating and a lack of physical activity.
These findings were published in The Pharmaceutical Journal on July 14, 2017.
